Keerthy Suresh

Keerthy Suresh is an actress in the South Indian film industries.[1] Keerthy was a child actress in the early 2000s and, after graduating in fashion design, she returned into lead roles. She played her first lead role in the 2013 Malayalam film Geethaanjali and has signed up films in Tamil and Telugu languages as well.

Early life[edit]
Keerthy Suresh was born to Malayali film producer Suresh Kumar and Tamil actress Menaka.[2][3] She has an elder sister, Revathy Suresh, who works as a VFX specialist and had previously worked for Shahrukh Khan's production house Red Chillies.[4][5] Until class four, Keerthy did her schooling in Chennai, Tamil Nadu.[6] She then studied in Kendriya Vidyalaya, Pattom, Thiruvananthapuram before coming back to Chennai to join the Pearl Academy where she completed her degree in fashion design.[5] She also spent time on an exchange program in Scotland for four months, before completing a two-month internship in London. Despite making a career in acting, she has stated that she was also "seriously considering a career in designing".[4]

Career[edit]
In the early 2000s, Keerthy worked as a child actress in a few of her father's productions such as Pilots (2000), Achaneyanenikkishtam (2001) and Kuberan (2002).[5] 11 years after Kuberan she made her debut as a lead actress in Priyadarshan's horror comedy Geethaanjali,[7] in which she had a dual role. She was still studying during that time and shot for Geethaanjali during her semester break.[8] Reviews on the film and her performance were mixed, with Sify writing that she "does put in some effort but make only limited impression in a double role",[9] while Rediff wrote that she "has got a plum role but whether she impresses with her acting prowess is another matter".[10] In 2014, Keerthy had her next release, Ring Master directed by Rafi of Rafi Mecartin duo in which she shared screen space with Dileep. She played the role of a blind girl,[11] which she said was much more challenging than her double role in Geethanjali.[12] The film was a commercial success,[13][14] being termed a "super hit" by Sify.[15]

In 2014, she accepted her first projects outside of Malayalam and signed on to appear in several Tamil film projects simultaneously. Her first film release was A. L. Vijay's romantic comedy Idhu Enna Maayam (2015) opposite Vikram Prabhu, though the film did not perform well at the box office.[16] Her busy schedule throughout 2015 meant that she had to opt out of films which she had already started working on, including Krishna's Maane Thaene Paeye and Deekay's Kavalai Vendam, in order to accommodate bigger projects.[17] She consequently worked on two films with Sivakarthikeyan in quick succession, Rajini Murugan and Remo, while also playing the lead role in Prabhu Solomon's Mirattu alongside Dhanush.[18] That year, she also signed up her first Telugu film, Aina Ishtam Nuvvu directed by Ramprasad Ragutu. The film, supposedly an adaptation of Rendu Jella Sita (which was also Aina Ishtam Nuvvu's initial title), was termed "a sweet love story on the lines of the Ramayana" by Keerthy, who would be playing Janaki, a "bubbly playful character" similar to Sita.[19] She has completed shooting for the art film Darboni in which she would be seen as a Kashmiri girl.[20] Besides she is part of Paambhu Sattai in Tamil, in which she plays a poor Chennai girl from a lower middle class strata,[6] and Nenu Sailaja in Telugu.[21]

Though both of them were commercial failures,[6] her performance in the latter fetched her critical acclaim. IndiaGlitz in ints review called Tamannaah as the "real scene-stealer" and stated that she "walks away with all honors", adding that her characters have shades of the characters played by Vijayashanti in Mannan (1992) and Ramya Krishnan in Padayappa (1999).[7]

Her first release of 2007 was Shakti Chidambaram's Viyabari in which she played the role of a journalist who wants to write an article about a successful entrepreneur played by S. J. Suryah. She won critical acclaim for her performances in both the films.[10] The commercial success of Happy Days and Kalloori established her career as an actress in both Telugu and Tamil films.[11] Her performance in the latter earned her a nomination at the 56th Filmfare Awards South in the Best Tamil Actress category.[12]

Her first release of 2008 was the Telugu film Kalidasu directed by debutante G. Ravicharan Reddy. She was paired with debutante Sushanth, the grandson of actor Akkineni Nageswara Rao.[10] Upon release, the film opened to moderate reviews and critics felt that she looked good and very romantic but had less scope to perform.[13][14][15] The film was an average grosser at the box office.[16] She later made a cameo appearance in the Telugu film Ready followed by another cameo appearance in the Telugu - Tamil bilingual Ninna Nedu Repu titled Netru Indru Naalai in Tamil.[17]
